NIGC Schedules Regional Training Opportunities

Washington, DC April 2, 2009 — As part of the agency’s on-going effort to provide technical assistance to tribes to ensure compliance with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) is offering regional training April 21- 23 in Sacramento, California. The agency will offer subsequent trainings April 28 – 30 in Rapid City, South Dakota, May 5 – 7 in Warm Springs, Oregon, and May 19 – 21 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Additional regional trainings are in the planning stages throughout this year.

In Sacramento, training topics presented by the NIGC’s Office of General Counsel will include a basic IGRA overview, ethics for gaming commissioners and gaming commission employees, and the respective roles of federal, state, and tribal regulators. NIGC’s Audit Division will present classes on minimum internal control standards and their importance in safeguarding tribes’ investments and their operations’ integrity. Topics to be addressed at other trainings will vary according to needs expressed to the NIGC.

The training is available free of charge to tribal leaders, tribal gaming commissions, regulatory and compliance officials and other interested parties, such as external auditors. Instructors are from the NIGC, other federal agencies and the private sector with experience in the day-to-day operation of gaming facilities and compliance and regulatory issues.

The NIGC believes implementing an effective training program will help tribes to comply with IGRA and protect the reputation of the tribal gaming industry. Based on input from tribal gaming operators and regulators, NIGC has developed a catalog of topics and presentations for regional trainings.

If you have a technical assistance training request, please contact the Region Director for your region or the Director of Training to discuss and coordinate.

Further information and announcements on training can be found at the NIGC website, www.nigc.gov under “Technical Assistance Training.”
