NIGC Conducts Training in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City, OK May 21, 2009 — The National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) is holding a technical assistance and training opportunity in Oklahoma City this week at the Best Western Saddle Back Inn. The training for tribal gaming operations located in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas is being offered May 19 – 21.

The training offered this week is in several areas of specialization, Audit Training and Regulators Training. Approximately 165 individuals are registered for this training in Oklahoma City, 100 for the regulators training and 65 for the audit section. Feedback from the attendees has been positive.

“It is very encouraging to see the NIGC showing a dedicated effort to offer cost effective training opportunities in our region. Over the past two years it seems the agency has stepped up its efforts to work with tribes in providing more diverse training as well as offering them more often,” said Jason Greenwalt, Gaming Commissioner & Executive Director of Citizen Potawatomi Nation Gaming Commission and attendee of the Oklahoma City Regional Training.

The audit training includes minimum internal control standards, accounting standards, gaming machines, table games and financial statements. The regulators training focuses on Class II technical standards, game classification, use of gaming revenues, surveillance, and environment, public health and safety.

The NIGC’s ongoing effort to provide technical assistance to tribes to ensure compliance with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and to improve the functioning of their gaming operations and regulatory authorities continues in Tulsa, Oklahoma, August 12-13, and in Ashland, Wisconsin September 8 – 10,.

The NIGC will be opening a new Oklahoma City Regional office, in addition to the current Tulsa Regional Office, in June. Until then, all Oklahoma tribes continue to receive services from the Tulsa office.

The NIGC is an independent regulatory agency established within the Department of the Interior pursuant to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988.
